Shipping and Trade: The Engine of New York and Philadelphia's Rise

New York City and Philadelphia flourished as colonial and early national ports due to their strategic waterways. NYC's position at the Hudson River's mouth gave direct Atlantic access. Philadelphia, on the Delaware River, reached the Atlantic via Delaware Bay. These natural harbors enabled efficient import/export, shipbuilding, warehousing, and merchant commerce. Goods flowed between interior farms and global markets. While manufacturing, finance, and later immigration fueled further growth, maritime trade was the foundational economic engine that launched both cities into prominence by the 18th century.
