Florida's Capitals Before Tallahassee
No. Tallahassee has been the capital only since 1845 (statehood). The territorial capitals were:
- Pensacola (1821–1824): First capital of the Florida Territory after Spanish cession.
- St. Augustine (1824–1845): Second territorial capital; chosen for its central location between East and West Florida.
Tallahassee was selected in 1824 as a compromise midpoint between the two former capitals and became the permanent seat upon statehood.
