Where the Sun Rises First in New York State: Montauk Point
The Easternmost Dawn
Montauk Point, at the tip of Long Island's South Fork, is the first place in New York State to see sunrise on any given day.
Why Montauk?
- Longitude: 71°51′ W — easternmost point of land in NYS.
- Geography: Juts into the Atlantic, unobstructed horizon.
- Elevation: ~15 m (Montauk Point Lighthouse) – minimal but enough for a few extra seconds.
Sunrise Time Differences (Approx.)
- Montauk vs. NYC (Battery Park): ~3 minutes 30 seconds earlier
- Montauk vs. Buffalo: ~38 minutes earlier
- Montauk vs. Albany: ~12 minutes earlier
Experience It
- Montauk Point State Park – open year-round, 6 AM–sunset (seasonal).
- Montauk Point Lighthouse (1796) – oldest in NYS; museum, tower climb (May–Oct).
- Camp Hero State Park – former military base, bluff trails.
Caveat
Due to atmospheric refraction and the equation of time, the exact "first light" location shifts slightly by date (a few hundred meters along the Napeague shoreline near equinoxes). But for all practical purposes: Montauk Point.
Bonus: The last sunset in NYS is at Cape Vincent (Lake Ontario, Thousand Islands) – ~38 minutes after Montauk's sunset.
