Where Does the Continent of Asia Begin?
The Europe-Asia Boundary: A Historical Convention
There is no geological separation—Europe and Asia form the continuous landmass Eurasia. The border is a cultural-historical construct formalized by 18th-century geographers (von Strahlenberg).
Modern Standard Boundary (North to South)
- Kara Sea / Kara Strait (north of Novaya Zemlya).
- Ural Mountains (north-south, ~2,500 km) — primary land divider.
- Ural River (south from Urals to Caspian Sea).
- Caspian Sea (western shore).
- Caucasus Mountains (watershed divide) — Kuma–Manych Depression (alternative, north of Caucasus).
- Black Sea.
- Bosporus Strait → Sea of Marmara → Dardanelles Strait.
- Aegean Sea / Mediterranean.
Turkey: The Transcontinental Nation
Turkey straddles the boundary:
- European Turkey (East Thrace): 3% of land, 15% of population (Istanbul west of Bosporus).
- Asian Turkey (Anatolia): 97% of land.
- Istanbul is the only metropolis on two continents.
Other Transcontinental Countries
- Russia: Urals divide European Russia (77% pop) from Siberia/Far East.
- Kazakhstan: Ural River splits west (Europe) / east (Asia).
- Georgia / Azerbaijan: Caucasus watershed debate (usually Asia, sometimes Europe politically).
Why It Matters
The line shapes geopolitics (EU/NATO/COE membership), identity, and statistics. But physically, it's a single tectonic plate (Eurasian) with no ocean between.
