New France
New France was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 as a fur-trading colony. It was primarily established as a base for French fur traders to access the interior of the continent and exploit its natural resources. The search for the Northwest Passage was a separate endeavor undertaken by European explorers in search of a direct water route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, mostly in the Arctic.
New Netherland
The Dutch established New Netherland in 1624 primarily for economic reasons, particularly to capitalize on the lucrative fur trade in the Hudson River Valley. The Dutch West India Company, which established the colony, was primarily focused on expanding its commercial interests in the region and less concerned with finding the Northwest Passage.
