What Are Some Unique Places to Visit in Costa Rica?

This Central American nation offers no shortage of unique places to visit. From rainforests, to beaches, hidden lagoons, fiery active volcanoes and interesting architecture, Costa Rica can not fail to leave a lasting impression on its visitors.
  1. Volcán Rincón de la Vieja National Park

    • Still relatively undiscovered, Von Seebach Peak is an active volcano dotted with swimming holes, steaming vents, mud pots and exquisite opportunities for wildlife viewing. Located in Volcán Rincón de la Vieja National Park, about 45 minutes' drive from Liberia Airport, this volcano is truly a unique travel destination.

The best season to visit is during the dry season between February and April. A 4.9-mile (8 km) trail leads from the Las Pailas Ranger Station to the summit. The majority of the trail has a gentle slope, but the last 1.2 miles (2 km) is a steep ascent. Stay on the trails to avoid stepping into vats of boiling mud. Although it may be warm and dry at the base of the volcano, it can get cool and wet near the summit. Wear long pants and bring a rain jacket. On a clear day, the summit offers superb views of the volcano's crater. There are no railings, so be extremely careful on windy days. Always bring a compass; avoid hiking in poor visibility.

Near the Las Pailas Ranger Station there are numerous opportunities for swimming and mud bathing. Follow the well-marked trails, and don't get into mud holes that have no sign posted. To visit Catarata la Cangreja, a stunning waterfall and lagoon, it's only a 3.1-mile (5 km) hike from Las Pailas. There are trails suitable for biking and horseback riding around the park.

    Tortuguero--"Turtle Place"

    • Between July and August, head to this mystical spot to watch turtles hatch. It's only accessible by boat or air. To get there yourself, take a bus from San José to Cariari or Moin. Then take a boat to Tortuguero. Multiple companies offer tour packages during turtle hatching season. In San José there are many tour companies where you can book packages. Be wary of touts who approach you in the street when you arrive in Cariari.

    Cocas Island

    • Not to be confused with Cocos (Keeling) Island, this rectangular-shaped island is an uninhabited site that has been named one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Famous for its ecotourism, and named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, a trip to Cocos Island will surely not disappoint you. The island boasts amazing opportunities for divers to observe hammerhead sharks, sting rays, dolphins and other underwater life. Located 550 kilometers off Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean, getting there is not quick and easy. It takes about 36 hours by boat from Puntarenas. Dive companies such as Undersea Hunter (www.underseahunter.com) can arrange trips to the island.
