What Places Are Exotic?

An exotic place is considered to be somewhere that is of foreign origin or character. Therefore, things that are exotic to North Americans may not be considered exotic to Europeans or people from South America. Based on cultural and geographical differences, the five most exotic places for North Americans are Morocco, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Egypt and China.
  1. Morocco

    • Sahara Desert.

Land in Morocco and your entire world will be flipped. The cultural differences can be overwhelming, but that's part of what makes Morocco so exotic. When visiting the imperial cities, you'll feel like you've been transported back in time 5,000 years. If wandering through the ancient cities and ruins isn't your thing, hop on a camel and head off into the Sahara desert. Nothing will ever feel as exotic.

    Bali, Indonesia

    • Bali Gate.

Indonesia, and more specifically Bali, is a destination like no other. Indonesian culture, cuisine and beaches make Bali look like anything but home. Bali is small in size and the entire island can be driven around in one day. However, that drive is anything but boring. You'll stumble upon temple ceremonies and beautiful beaches, and have the opportunity to see mesmerizing dance performances that will make you feel like you're in a whole different world.

    Costa Rica

    • A beach in Costa Rica.

With the ocean and the rainforest a stone's throw from each other, Costa Rica may be considered the ultimate exotic escape for people from North American or Europe. Despite it being one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world, you can still visit and enjoy Costa Rica on a budget. Meals can cost as low as $3 a person. Rainforests, volcanoes, beaches and exotic wildlife like howler monkeys make Costa Rica the ultimate exotic destination.

    Cairo, Egypt

    • Pyramids in Egypt.

One of the most fascinating countries in the world based on archaeology alone, Egypt boasts the pyramids, the Nile and miles of sand that eventually stretch into the Sahara. While Cairo is chaotic and busy, its culture is like nothing seen in North America. With 20 million residents, Cairo's streets are always busy and there's always something going on. It's the ultimate combination of busy metropolis and ancient history.

    China

    • Great Wall of China.

The Great Wall of China, Tibet, Shanghai, a cuisine based on rice and an immense number of people make China one of the most exotic countries and cultures in the world. Being the third largest country by land mass means nothing when China has a population of over 1 billion people. The diversity of the landscape is incredible, from the bustling city of Shanghai, where you can't walk one block without rubbing shoulders with someone, to isolated villages on mountaintops where you can see, and hear, for miles. China's vast number of people and its cultural differences make it an exotic and exciting place.
