Does Birmingham Have More Canals Than Venice?

No. This is a persistent urban myth.

The Numbers

  • Venice: ~150–170 canals; total length ~40–45 km (25–28 mi); entire historic center is canal-based.
  • Birmingham (UK): ~58 km (36 mi) of canals (mostly 18th/19th-century industrial navigation) — but only ~15–20 km remain navigable in the city core (Gas Street Basin, Brindleyplace, Mailbox). Many are culverted or derelict.

Why the Myth?

Birmingham's total historic canal mileage (including suburban/Black Country network) exceeds Venice's city-center length — but Venice's canals are its streets; Birmingham's were freight arteries. Different functions, scales, and urban forms.

Birmingham proudly markets its "more canals than Venice" claim for tourism — but it's a comparison of total historic network length vs. active urban canals, not a like-for-like measure.
