Why did Italy not industrialize sooner?

Italy industrialized later than other Western European nations for several reasons:

- Fragmented Political Structure: Italy was divided into numerous states pre-unification in 1861. This political fragmentation hindered coordinated industrialization efforts and created inconsistent economic policies.

- Lack of Natural Resources: Unlike other European countries, Italy lacked significant mineral resources such as coal and iron. This scarcity necessitated imported raw materials for industries, increasing costs.

- Agricultural Economy: Italy's economy was predominantly agricultural, and agriculture was still labor-intensive. Industrialization involves a shift of resources and labor from agriculture to industry, but Italy's slow-moving agriculture sector hindered this shift.

- Limited Capital: Many Italian businesses were undercapitalized. Industrialization required substantial investments, which were not always readily available.

- Low Literacy Rate: Compared to other European nations, Italy had a relatively low literacy rate, which limited the dissemination of new technologies and ideas necessary for industrialization.
