Belgium's Currency: The Euro Since 1999

Belgium uses the euro (€, EUR) as its official currency. It was a founding member of the Eurozone and adopted the euro on January 1, 1999 (for electronic accounting) and January 1, 2002 (physical notes and coins), replacing the Belgian franc (BEF) at a fixed conversion rate of 1 EUR = 40.3399 BEF.

Euro banknotes (€5–€500) are identical across the Eurozone. Belgian euro coins feature King Philippe (current) or previous monarchs (Albert II, Baudouin) on the national side, with the common European reverse. The National Bank of Belgium (NBB) issues notes and coins as part of the Eurosystem.

Belgium's adoption reflected deep European integration (EU/NATO headquarters in Brussels). The euro eliminated exchange risk with major trading partners (Germany, France, Netherlands) and facilitated cross-border commerce and labor mobility.
