Top Ski Areas in Colorado

Colorado offers a plethora of top-notch ski areas. Skiing Magazine ranks four of Colorado’s ski areas among its 2010 top 10 in the United States. The magazine bases its annual list of top resorts on reader surveys. Parents Magazine included two Colorado ski resorts in its list of best resorts for families. Colorado ski areas took three of the top four honors on Transworld Magazine’s list of top 10 parks for snowboarding.

    • Vail rated well in reviews by both Skiing Magazine and Parents Magazine.

      Vail was rated third place in Skiing Magazine’s 2010 top 10 ski resorts in the nation, based on the magazine’s annual reader survey. According to Skiing Magazine, more than a million people visited Vail during 2009. The magazine praised Vail’s ski runs, dining and lodging, noting that it is a tourist draw both winter and summer. The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa, located in the Vail valley’s millage of Avon, took the number two slot on Parents Magazine’s list of best snow resorts. Services available include transportation to kids’ ski school, valet service, boot warming, family movie and crafts night, heated outdoor pool and supervised kids activities, Parents Magazine noted. Beaver Creek ski area also offers tubing, sleigh rides, ice-skating, Thursday night fireworks displays and afternoon cookie breaks, Parents Magazine wrote.

    Aspen

    • The terrain parks and celebrities at Aspen make the area notable.

      The Aspen and Aspen Highlands area ranked sixth on the Skiing Magazine 2010 list of top 10 ski resorts. “The pampered and privileged add certain panache to the scene, but people visit Aspen first and foremost because of the world-class skiing and riding,” the magazine wrote. Besides the short wait at the lifts, the magazine noted Aspen’s entertainment and cultural venues. Buttermilk Park garnered the No. 1 slot on Transworld Magazine’s Top 10 terrain parks list. The three parks that make up Snowmass parks came in fourth place on Transworld’s list.

    Telluride

    • Telluride's Wild West atmosphere and kid-friendly lodging make the area popular.

      Telluride came in seventh among U.S. ski resort among readers of Skiing Magazine in its 2010 survey.

      Skiing Magazine praised Telluride’s Wild West atmosphere, ski runs, entertainment and lodging. The Peaks Resort & Golden Door Spa in Telluride ranked No. 5 on Parents Magazine’s list of top snow resorts for its child-friendly atmosphere.

    Steamboat Springs

    • Steamboat offers a unique setting to ski and soak in the hot springs.

      It’s no coincidence that 63 winter Olympians hail from Steamboat, Skiing Magazine wrote of the resort their readers ranked No. 9 on the 2010 top 10 list. The aspen and pine trees at Steamboat “offer some of the world’s best tree skiing,” the magazine wrote. The magazine also noted the hot springs that give the town its name as an alternative after-hours entertainment venue.
