How did Norway become an independent country?

Independence from Sweden

Norway was in a personal union with Denmark from 1380 to 1523, and then in a personal union with Sweden from 1523 to 1814. During this time, Norway had its own laws, institutions, and culture, but it was not a sovereign state.

In 1814, Denmark-Norway was defeated in the Napoleonic Wars. As a result of the war, Norway was ceded to Sweden by the Treaty of Kiel. The Norwegians refused to accept the union with Sweden, and on May 17, 1814, they adopted a constitution and declared their independence.

The declaration of independence was met with resistance from Sweden. In the summer of 1814, a Swedish army invaded Norway and forced the Norwegians to accept the union. However, Norway retained its constitution and its own institutions.

Union with Sweden

The union between Norway and Sweden lasted for 91 years. During this time, Norway experienced a period of economic growth and cultural development. The country also gained greater autonomy, and in 1905, it finally achieved full independence from Sweden.

Full Independence

Norway's full independence in 1905 was the result of several factors, including:

* The growth of Norwegian nationalism: During the 19th century, there was a growing sense of national identity among Norwegians. This was due in part to the country's economic development and the spread of literacy.

* The decline of Swedish power: During the 19th century, Sweden experienced a decline in its military and economic power. This made it more difficult for Sweden to maintain its control over Norway.

* The international situation: In the early 20th century, there was a growing interest in self-determination and national independence. This was due in part to the spread of democracy and the rise of anti-colonial movements.

In 1905, a crisis arose between Norway and Sweden over the issue of foreign service representation. The Norwegians wanted to establish their own foreign service, but the Swedes refused to allow this. In response, the Norwegian parliament voted to dissolve the union with Sweden.

Sweden initially resisted the dissolution of the union, but it eventually backed down. On October 26, 1905, Norway declared its full independence. This was a significant event in Norwegian history, and it is celebrated every year on October 26 as Norwegian Independence Day.
