When was Berlin founded?
Berlin was originally founded around the 12th century, at the intersection of two important trade routes: the east-west road between Leipzig and Frankfurt (Oder), and the north-south road connecting the Baltic Sea with the River Spree. First mentioned as a Slavic fort in 1237, the city rapidly developed into a city under the rule of Otto III, Margrave of Brandenburg, in the 13th century.
