You could walk through Rome on your own reading a guide book and map as you explore the attractions, but taking a guided walking tour can save you the trouble of having your nose in a book when you should be seeing the fabulous sights. Walking tours are available and offer a wide range of itineraries to suit your interests. Prices range from €20 to 40 for a three-hour tour with guide. Be sure to confirm if admission to any sights you go into are covered by the tour price.

While it's nothing like zipping through the streets on a Vespa, a bike tour can give you a unique perspective of Rome. Routes are planned to maximize safety, and you can choose between an independent tour or an escorted tour. The Escorted Rome Cruiser Bike Tour consists of only you, a friend and the guide for only €49 each for four hours, or do it alone for only €19 each. On the Rome Center Bike Tour, you will be in a group with a guide. Prices begin at €29 for a four-hour tour.

If your feet get tired of wandering Rome, try a hop on/hop off bus tour. These tours allow you to pay one fare (around €15) and have the driver take you to various sights around the city. You can get off at the sights that interest you, explore on your own and then get back on the next bus that shows up. These tours are somewhat independent (the drivers/guides will provide a little information or perhaps a handout), and you are not escorted by a guide at the sights. If you don't want to bother with public transportation, this can be a good choice. Two choices include:

If you want the least expensive way to tour Rome, get out your walking shoes and MP3 player and take a audio tour. ITunes offers a variety of free podcasts, including the informative Rick Steves series, art audio tours, history audio tours and many others. Download them before you leave home, and you'll have them ready when you begin your walk.
