Coliseum Tours of Rome

For history buffs, nothing is more thrilling that visiting Rome and seeing the ancient Roman Coliseum. The Coliseum, also spelled Colosseum, was built in 72 CE by the Romans to commemorate the Greeks and to pacify the Roman population by offering free gladiator shows. The Coliseum seated 50,000 people at a time to show gladiator games and other public events. It is estimated that over 500,000 people and 1 million animals died during gladiator games. The building is a symbol of the power of the Roman Empire and reminds us of the influence that this ancient culture had on the Western world.     Segway Tours

    • Segways are an easy way to get around Rome.

      If you are interested in seeing Rome faster than a walking tour, but are concerned about your physical fitness, or just want to have fun without exercising, consider going on a Segway tour.

      As of February 2010, Rome Cruiser Bike Tours offers segway tours that give you time to become acclimated to riding a Segway before embarking on a three-hour tour around Rome and the Coliseum.

      Compare your experience visiting this ancient monument on a Segway to the way in which millions of people who have visited the Coliseum for centuries have seen it. Tours will not enter the inside of the Coliseum.

    Walking Tours

    • Walking tours enter the Coliseum.

      Walking tours of the Coliseum and Rome are slower and do not allow you to see as much as Segway or bike tours. However, you will get to spend more time at each monument or museum, and perhaps take in more of the scenery.

      As of February 2010, Rome Tour Company offers an in-depth tour of ancient Roman monuments including the Coliseum, Trajan's Markets and the Roman Forum.

      A licensed tour guide leads the tour, which lasts three hours. Another benefit of a walking tour above a bike or Segway tour is that your guide will take you inside the museums and monuments and explain their interiors.
