Main Sights to See in Rome, Italy

As one of the most historical cities in the world, Rome attracts a great number of travelers every year. When planning a first trip to Rome the amount of historical landmarks and attractions can be overwhelming. However, if travelers are short on time and need to prioritize, a few places simply cannot be missed when visiting this Italian city.
  1. Colosseum

    • Colosseum

This imposing historical structure probably represents Rome more than any other. Completed in AD 80, this elliptical stadium became the sight for gladiator games, executions, the reenactment of historical battles and theater performances all held in front of about 55,000 people. Although the Colosseum exists mostly in ruins today, it is still used for entertainment purposes and is considered one of the most important symbols of Rome. When going to Rome for the first time, this piece of history cannot be missed.

    Sistine Chapel

    • Vatican City

As the host of one of the most famous ceilings in history, the Sistine Chapel is actually a part of the Vatican Museums. Visitors can view Michelangelo's famous ceiling as well as other artwork from artists like Raphael and Botticelli. If visitors choose to see this Italian landmark, they should plan to spend the day exploring other parts of Vatican City as well, including other museums and St. Peter's Basilica.

    Pantheon

    • Pantheon Oculus

Most know for its oculus (a giant opening in the dome) and considered one of the best preserved buildings from the Roman Empire, the Pantheon in Rome is an unusual but powerful structure. Although it was originally a pagan temple, it was converted into a church in the seventh century. Now it is a resting place of the painter Raphael and several Italian kings. Because of its rich history and well preserved architecture, the Pantheon should be on any visitor's list of places to see.

    Trevi Fountain

    • Trevi Fountain

This breathtaking fountain marks the end of an aqueduct built in 18 BC and provides water to all the fountains in the historic region of Rome. In the center of the fountain rests a statue of Neptune (Roman god of the sea) riding two horses that are said to represent the moods of the sea. However, this fountain is famous for another reason as well. According to local legend, if you toss a coin over your shoulder and into the fountain you will someday return to Rome. So if you fall in love with Rome, visiting this landmark is another must.

    Spanish Steps

    • Spanish Steps

A set of steps built in the eighteenth century, the Spanish Steps have become a cultural and fashion center of Rome. Once a year these steps and the square below play host to an important Italian fashion show where the stairs themselves are used as the catwalk. Also, the two most glamorous streets in Rome lead to the Spanish steps (via Condotti and via del Babuino), and many of the Italian designer boutiques can be found in and around the area.
