As a gift to the United States by the people of France, the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor is one of the most famous monuments in the world. Designed by the sculpture Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi in 1874, the statue was completed in France in 1884, shipped to New York City and opened to the public in 1886. Replicas of the Statue of Liberty, including earlier models and castings by Bartholdi, are found in Paris and in Barholdi's hometown of Colmar, France.     • Colmar, France is the birthplace of Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and home to the world's largest replica of the Statue of Liberty. Installed in 2004, the 100th anniversary of Bartholdi's death, the statue welcomes visitors at the northern entrance to Colmar. The nearby Bartholdi Museum houses detailed plans, numerous models and replicas that Bartholdi used when creating the Statue of Liberty. After visiting the statue and museum, wander the picturesque streets of this Alsatian country town located near the Swiss and German border. Spared the bombings that destroyed many French cities, walking through untouched Colmar, you'll see architecture that represents 1,000 years of French history.

    Iles des Cygnes - Paris, France

    • On a man-made island, the Iles des Cygnes, in the middle of the Seine near the Grenelle bridge, sits one of the most famous replicas of the Statue of Liberty. Installed in 1889, the statue faces west pointing at its famous sister across the Atlantic Ocean. The Eiffel Tower is conveniently located a few blocks away. A fitting tribute since Gustav Eiffel created the flexible iron frame that holds the Statue of Liberty up right. After exploring the Eiffel Tower and adjacent Trocadero gardens, take a ride up the Seine on a bateaux mouche, a glass covered sightseeing boat.
