Lake Como has been a popular vacation destination since early Roman times. Situated in northern Italy, the lake is unique in that it has three main stretches of water, branching in different directions. At the center of these branches, you’ll find the village of Bellagio. The town has retained much of its old world charm, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Be aware that most places in Bellagio and the surrounding areas are accessible by walking, but for longer treks to other nearby villages, a different mode of transportation is advised. Lake Como offers several local taxi services including water taxis. Another alternative is to rent a Smart Car. These popular cars are low emission micro vehicles built for two to four passengers.
Decide where you will stay. Bellagio has a wide range of accommodations to fit your requirements and budget. The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a five-star deluxe hotel overlooking Lake Como. This renovated villa offers visitors all the amenities expected of an upscale establishment including a tennis court, private beach and a full-scale salon with spa. The Hotel Metropole is a three-star hotel located in central Bellagio offering all modern amenities including satellite television, swimming pool, mini-bar and gym. For a charming alternative to traditional hotels, guests to Bellagio should consider one of the local bed and breakfast establishments throughout the village. Two of the more popular bed and breakfast destinations are Alla Torretta and The Bellagio Bed and Breakfast.
Know that with dozens of restaurants to choose from, deciding where to dine may be the hardest decision a guest will make while visiting this resort town. Most restaurants in Bellagio specialize in local Italian cuisine and fresh fish is a staple for many Lake Como restaurants. Ristorante Silvio and La Pergola are fine dining establishments offering a wide range of dishes and local wines. For a more relaxed atmosphere Babayaga’s is a favorite with natives and visitors alike, offering cold cuts, fresh pasta and pizza.
Plan an itinerary that includes trips to local historical sites that may be of interest to you. Villa Serbelloni offers a one to two hour tour of its 18th century garden and grounds. Numerous historic churches and museums are found throughout the Lake Como area including the Basilica of San Giacomo and the museum of navigational instruments. Lake tours are also available for short one hour excursions or day long trips.
