Why is Europe rich in natural resource?

Europe is not particularly rich in natural resources compared to other continents. While it does have some reserves of coal, natural gas, and metals, Europe relies heavily on imports of many minerals and raw materials. The continent's economy is more strongly based on trade, industry, and services than on extraction of natural resources.
