How to Locate the Carpathian Mountains

Europe contains many mountainous regions, with mountain ranges often serving as natural borders between nations. One of the mountain ranges that creates a border between countries is the Carpathian Mountains, also known simply as the Carpathians. The Carpathians are the second longest mountain range in Europe, measuring over 900 miles long. Because so much of Europe is mountainous, however, it can sometimes be difficult to recognize individual mountain ranges such as the Carpathian Mountains if you don't know exactly where they are located.

Consult your map or atlas and locate Slovakia, the country immediately north of Hungary and south of both the Czech Republic and Poland. It is bordered by Austria on the west and Ukraine on the east.

Look at the northern border of Slovakia; a mountain range separates it from Poland and from a portion of the Czech Republic. This range is the Carpathian Mountains, and the portion of the mountain range found in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia is typically referred to as the "Western Carpathians."

Follow the Carpathian range east and south across Poland and into the Ukraine and Romania. The portion of the mountain range located in these countries is referred to as the "Eastern Carpathians."
