  1. History

    • Certain aspects of Brecon Beacons date back 4,000 years. The area has been a hot bed of historical occurrences. In the Iron Age, many areas across the park functioned as trading centers or meeting places for political discourse. In 43 AD, the Romans stationed upwards of 600 soldiers near Brecon Beacons. During the dark ages, King Offa ordered the construction Offa's Dyke. Offa's Dyke runs 150 miles along the Welsh border, and a significant chunk of the dyke runs through the park.

    • You could easily spend a few days taking in all the sights at Brecon Beacons. Some aspects of the history of Brecon Beacons can still be seen. There are 10 different castles and ruins throughout the park that date back two centuries. There are eight churches and chapels that you can visit. In addition, there are plenty of beautiful sight-seeing activities. Brecon Beacons has a number of arts and crafts courses and galleries. You can see performing arts at the Red Kite Theatre.

    • Brecon Beacons' size gives it a incredibly diverse set of environments through out the park. A biodiverse park, Brecon Beacons has wetlands, woodlands, farmlands and grasslands. Park officials work with farmers and other outside contributors to develop and maintain these environments to their fullest. These diverse environments allow Brecon Beacons to be home to many different species of animals. Walking around Brecon Beacons, you might see otters, bats and lapwings.

    Who Runs Brecon Beacons?

    • The park has a staff of 130 workers and volunteers. The National Park Authority, which runs the park, has 24 members. The staff is not just in charge of the park's upkeep, but they also serve as guides to assist tourist in fully enjoying their time at the park. Since its official founding in 1957, the National Park Authority has established strong goals and ambitious plans, plotted out for the next 20 years.
