Construction of the Palais Garnier started in 1861 and ended in 1875. In part, its construction was delayed by political events facing France at the time. In 2000, renovation work occurred on the main facade of the building, and the Grand Foyer was renovated in 2004. The Palais Garnier has never been destroyed and has never changed official name or location.
The total surface area of the Palais Garnier is a about 37,000 square feet. Its exterior is white with two golden statues atop the left and right sides of the building. The structure is intended to be reminiscent of Italian-style opera houses and inspired in part by the Grand Theatre in Bordeaux, France. These features, combined with its sheer size, should make the Palais Garnier easy to spot.
