Where Is Lake Mead?

Formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River after its completion in 1936, Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake in the United States. Lake Mead is about 110 miles long, covering a surface area of about 248 square miles with an estimated 550 miles of shoreline. Lake Mead has a depth of up to 500 feet. Lake Mead was designated a National Recreation Area in 1964, the first National Recreation Area in the country.

    • Lake Mead is located on the border between southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona about 30 miles east of Las Vegas and 100 miles west of the Grand Canyon. Other nearby towns and cities are Boulder City, River Mountain, Paradise Hills, and Carver Park.
