How Do I Get to Neuschwanstein?

Of all the examples of Europe's Romantic architecture, Neuschwanstein Castle may be one of the most recognizable. Situated at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, the castle is a popular tourist destination that has a fantasy-like and enduring historical legacy.
  1. General

    • The first thing to do is board a plane for Germany. Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the state of Bavaria, which is in the western portion of the country. Your destination lies in southern Bavaria so, ideally, you should arrange a flight that will take you to the Munich, the closest major city to Neuschwanstein.

    To Fussen

    • From Munich, the castle is not far by either train or car. The town of Fussen is a popular place for travelers to the castle to find accommodations right at the base of the Bavarian Alps. Trains connect Munich to Fussen on an hourly basis with a trip of about two hours. The journey can be slightly shorter by car, with roughly an hour and a half drive.

    History

    • Although reminiscent of the Middle Ages, Neuschwanstein Castle's construction was not begun until the late 19th century. Its chief patron, Bavarian King Ludwig II, designed many of its rooms in order to perform Wagnerian operas. Ludwig died before it was ever completed, some say under mysterious circumstances, according to the Guide to Castles of Europe website.
