Baden-Wurttemberg is located in Heidelberg and has been an active military base since the end of World War II. Before it became a U.S. Army base, it was home to Germany's 110th German Infantry Division. Currently, the Army base is home to about 16,000 military, family members, and U.S. civilian employees. More than 30 tenant units are part of the Heidelberg military community.
Located approximately an hour and a half from Heidelberg, U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt is home to about 11,000 people with 4,000 being soldiers, family members, and U.S. civilian employees. Most of the soldiers are assigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade. Schweinfurt is broken into two housing areas on two installations. The garrison headquarters is located in Ledward Barracks along with Army Community Service, Ledward Library, PX, Shoppette, and the Schweinfurt U.S. Army Health Clinic. The Conn Barracks contains the veterinary clinic, Finney Fitness and Recreation Center, and the Auto Skills Center.
U.S. Army Garrison Mannheim is located 20 minutes from Heidelberg in Mannheim. Immediately after World War II, the 1st Support Brigade was activated in Mannheim beginning the history of Mannheim Garrison. After that time, Mannheim operating base has mostly provided base operations support for local tenant units. Currently, around 500 people work at Mannheim to support tenant and transient units in the area consisting of 15,000 military, family members, and civilians.
