Citizens are the heart of America; the military is its muscles. More than a million soldiers, sailors and Air Force personnel are based within the continental United States and its territories and thousands more are based overseas.
The military installations in Virginia hold a prominent strategic position for America's military forces. The Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, is home to the Department of Defense. Other bases across the state house and train the men and women committed to keeping America free.
Everyone remembers the plane crashing into the Pentagon on 9-11. For many that is about all they know about the center of operations for the nation's armed forces. The building houses the offices of the Department of Defense, including that of the Secretary of Defense.
According to the Department of Defense, the Pentagon houses over 20,000 employees and is one of the world's largest office buildings. Despite its immense size, the building is so efficiently designed that no place inside is farther than a 7 1/2-minute walk away.
