In Ireland, as in much of the Western Christian world, Santa Claus (Daidí na Nollag) visits on Christmas Eve night (December 24th).
Children leave out mince pies and a glass of milk (or Guinness for Santa, carrots for the reindeer) before bed. Gifts appear under the tree or at the foot of the bed by morning. The tradition blends ancient Celtic winter customs with Christian celebration.
So if you’re counting down: Santa arrives tonight if it’s Dec 24th!
