Why is Dublin called fair city?

The Irish term for Dublin is "baile átha cliath" which translated means "hurdle ford". The name comes from the fact that medieval Dublin developed from what was originally a ford on the River Liffey. The term "Fair City" is said to date from the 1800's when the novelist Maria Edgeworth referred to the Irish capital as "the Fair City".
