Hiking and cycling are so popular in this region, that a local website has been set up that allows travelers to search for trails according to location, activity, difficulty and category.
The city of Shannon is home to two "musts" when it comes to retail therapy.
SkyCourt Shopping Center is the newest. It opened in 2004 as part of a civic investment of some 60 million Euros that also involved the design of a new town square for Shannon, where the shopping center is located. In its more than 200,000 square feet, the SkyCourt Shopping Center is home to branches of Lidl, Dunnes and Tesco, as well as a massive food court.
The Ballycasey Craft Centre is a more one-of-a-kind shopping experience, as it is set in the courtyard of a farmhouse dating from the 18th century. It was set up in the early 1980s as a means for promoting Irish crafts and design. Here is the place to get your "only in Ireland" souvenirs.
The Bunratty Castle was constructed in 1425. In 1954, it was restored, and today, it is one of Ireland's most important Medieval landmarks. It contains more than 450 items of Medieval furniture and antiques. You can also tour the Bunratty Walled Garden, which was constructed so as to supply the castle with fruits and vegetables. Also on the grounds, you will find the Bunratty Folk Park, which will take you back to life in the 19th century.
