History of Spain's National Anthems: Marcha Real and Himno de Riego

Spain's anthem history is unique:

• Marcha Real (The Royal March): Composed in 1761 as a military march. It has no official lyrics. It served as the national anthem during the monarchy (1770–1931, 1939–1975, and since 1975).
• Himno de Riego: Written in 1822 during the Liberal Triennium. It was the official anthem during the Second Spanish Republic (1931–1939).

Since the 1978 Constitution, the Marcha Real is the sole official national anthem, though it remains wordless.
