What size of army did the Cortes have on his first entrance into Mexico?

The Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés did not have an army when he first arrived in Mexico in 1519. He landed on the coast of present-day Veracruz with a small force of about 600 men, 16 horses, and some artillery pieces. These men were mainly sailors and adventurers, not professional soldiers. Cortés later enlisted the help of indigenous allies, particularly the Tlaxcalans, whose forces greatly outnumbered the Spanish.
