Activities in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, MX

Puerto Escondido has been used as a fishing port and shipping hub in southern Mexico since the 1930s. In addition to those uses, the city is also known for great surfing and swimming along its miles of pristine beaches. Adventurers often enjoy the forests that surround the series of mountains that wrap around the area.
  1. Enjoy the Surf

    • Every February and November thousands of surfers head to Puerto Escondido to compete in competitions at Playa Zicatela. This beach is known as the "Mexican Pipeline" and it poses a serious challenge to advanced surfers from all over the world. Visitors also enjoy a series of coves that exist along the beaches of Puerto Escondido. These coves are often riptide-free and great for family swimming adventures. Be aware that night swimming is not recommended and that very few lifeguards exist in the area.

    Explore Wildlife

    • Manialtepec Lagoon, where the Pacific coast meets the ecosystem of the Oaxaca mountains, is the home of nearly 300 birds and a long list of mammals. Enjoy time here with a camera and a set of binoculars and take a count of how many different creatures that you are able to see.

Visit the national park of Lagunas de Chacahua, where mangrove swamps offer visitors a chance to see even more wildlife. Be careful in this area, however, because saltwater crocodiles also frequent these swamps.

Turtle fans will be able to see giant turtles sunning themselves on beaches and swimming in the waters of Puerto Escondido. Do not touch the turtles, and give them plenty of space. They are a protected species. Every May you may see volunteers from Oaxaca's Mazunte Turtle center collecting turtle eggs. The center incubates the eggs to insure that they hatch.

    Catch a Fish

    • The Pacific currents from the south meet the cooler waters coming down from the north at Puerto Escondido. This creates a breeding ground for a large variety of fish including shark, tuna, mackerel, barracuda and dorado. There are hundreds of charter fishing companies and boat rental outlets in the area. Charters are recommended for fishermen seeking black marlin and sailfish unless they are very experienced.

    Go Shopping

    • Puerto Escondido offers many popular shopping destinations. Some of the most famous surf shops and outdoor markets in all of Mexico are situated in the heart of the city. Visit places like Bazar Santa Fe, Amazonia do Brazil, Trapoy y Harapos and Bikini Brazil, where you can be measured and fitted for a sexy string bikini. You can also find a large selection of native crafts and Balinese clothing and art.
