Leisure Activities in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States that is located in the Caribbean. The capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, offers several leisure activities for locals and tourists, as does the rest of the island. Tourists and locals can enjoy water activities at Porta Caribe, a trip to the Museo de Arte and nature hikes in El Yunque, all of which showcase the unique culture of Puerto Rico.

    • Porta Caribe is the name of the southern region of Puerto Rico. Porta Caribe is made up of several small seaside towns and villages, such as Guayanilla and Salinas. Porta Caribe features several public beaches where locals and tourists can visit and relax in the sun. Tourists and locals in Porta Caribe are able to take part in a variety of leisure water activities, including snorkeling tours and kayaking and fishing. Fishing boats are also commonly found in the waters around Porta Caribe. Those who seek adventurous leisure activities can take a ride on a high-speed banana boat around Porta Caribe. Those less adventurous can take a sailboat ride around Porta Caribe and experience the area's beautiful sunsets.

    Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico

    • The Museo de Arte is another common leisure activity for locals and tourists in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Museo de Arte is located in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan and was constructed in a former hospital that was built in a Neoclassical style. The museum, which opened in 2000, is the largest and most extensive art museum in the Caribbean. The Museo de Arte features 1,100 pieces of art in a variety of styles and genres. Guests at the museum can enjoy the five-acre sculpture garden that is located on the grounds or eat at the museum's restaurant, Pikayo. The Museo de Arte is open seven days a week and costs $6 for adults and $3 for children.

    Nature Hikes in El Yunque

    • Locals and tourists who enjoy outdoor leisure activities can travel to El Yunque, a city that is located in eastern Puerto Rico. El Yunque is home to the El Portal Tropical Forest Center, a nature preserve where tourists and locals can hike on trails and be exposed to over 200 types of birds and trees. The El Portal Tropical Forest Center is also home to several large and beautiful waterfalls. Hikers in the forest are able to follow the trails on their own or join one of several daily hiking tours. Hiking tours range from beginner to advanced.
