Exotic Mexican Getaways

For its natural beauty, alluring culture, year-round warmth and proximity to the United States, Mexico is a popular tourist destination for vacationing Americans. If you're headed to Mexico and want to get a bit off the tourist trail, to more exotic getaways, you can find those south of the border as well.
  1. Tulum

    • Located on the Yucatan Peninsula, south of popular tourist destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Tulum sits on a less-developed stretch of the Caribbean. In addition to it being less developed, Tulum also gains points in the exotic category for the Mayan ruins scattered around it, a pleasing getaway for history buffs and beach bums alike.

    Tamazunchale

    • San Luis Potosi is the Mexican state located just north of Distrito Federal, home to Mexico City, the national capital. If you're visiting Mexico City and want to take an exotic journey off the beaten path, drive or take a taxi north into San Luis Potosi and head toward Tamazunchale. Whether you're looking for birds or native people among the dense, mountain wilderness, you'll feel transported to another time from the moment you arrive.

    Monterrey

    • Monterrey is the anchor city of the second-largest metropolitan area in Mexico. The cultural center of northern Mexico, Monterrey is home to attraction like the colonial-era Palacio de Gobernio (Government Palace) and the ALFA planetarium. Sprawled across the mountains of the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, Monterrey is located just a few hours from the U.S. border by car.
