Two famous valleys in the desert region along the U.S.-Mexico border:

1. Death Valley (Mojave Desert)

• Location: Eastern California, edge of Nevada.
• Extremes: Hottest (56.7°C / 134°F), driest, lowest point (-86 m / -282 ft at Badwater Basin) in North America.
• Features: Salt flats, sand dunes, colorful badlands, spring wildflowers, unique endemic species (pupfish, creosote).
• Status: Death Valley National Park.

2. Coachella Valley (Sonoran Desert)

• Location: Southern California (Riverside County), extending from San Gorgonio Pass to Salton Sea.
• Climate: Hot desert, winter warmth attracts "snowbirds."
• Features: Palm Springs, Indio, Coachella Festival, date farms, golf resorts, Joshua Tree NP access.
• Water: Relies on Colorado River aqueduct & groundwater; Salton Sea is environmental concern.

Death Valley is extreme wilderness; Coachella Valley is a developed desert oasis. Both define the borderland desert.
