When did they name New York York?

New York City was founded in 1664 by the Dutch and was originally named New Amsterdam. In 1664, it was captured by the English and renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York and Albany, the future King James II of England. The state of New York was named after the city in 1788 when it became the 11th state of the United States.
