Why New Jersey Is Named After the Isle of Jersey

The name “New Jersey” traces back to the Channel Island of Jersey in the English Channel. When English colonists settled the area in the 17th century, they noted similarities in climate and landscape between the new territory and the island. In honor of that connection, they christened the colony “New Jersey.”
