Why is New Jeresy named Jersey?

The name "Jersey" comes from the island of Jersey in the English Channel. When English colonists first arrived in the area, they noticed similarities between the two places, such as the climate and the vegetation. They decided to name their new home "New Jersey" in honor of the island.
