Who originally settled New York and what was it called?

New York was originally settled by the Lenape people, who called the area "Mannahatta" or "Manahachtanienk", meaning "island of many hills." The Lenape were the first inhabitants of the area and lived there for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.
