Northern California Outdoor Activities

Northern California is home to a number of large cities, such as San Francisco, Sacramento and Fresno. The definition of the area of Northern California varies, but the northern half of the state is filled with many outdoor attractions, ranging from kayaking to hiking to taking guided tours of the area. Many parks exist in these cities, so you can pack a lunch and enjoy a day with your family while enjoying the outdoors.
  1. Family Kayak Adventure Center

    • Family Kayak Adventure Center, in San Diego, California, offers private kayak lessons and local nature tours. These tours are available for anyone ages 2 and up, for adults only or for families and kids. One tour offered is an animal wildlife tour that will take you slowly through the northernmost habitat of Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtles in San Diego Bay. You will also see hundreds of migrating birds, including snow geese, great blue herons and pelicans. Certified kayak instructors tailor lessons and the tour based on your degree of ability and experience.

    Yosemite National Park

    • Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Nevada region of northern California, covers almost 1,200 square miles of mountainous terrain. Yosemite is open all year, but snow prevents access by car between November and May. The park offers outdoor activities such as backpacking, biking, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing and fishing. In addition, lodging and camping are available. Some well-known areas in Yosemite National Park include Yosemite Valley, Yosemite Falls and Cooks Meadow. Yosemite Falls typically only runs after winter snow arrives because the waterfall is fed mostly by snowmelt.

    San Francisco Guided Segway Tours

    • The Electric Tour Company offers a fully narrated guided Segway tour of San Francisco, an eco-friendly alternative to a bus or trolley tour, by day or night. Before the tour, you receive 50 minutes of safety training. You will explore areas of the San Francisco waterfront such as Fisherman's Wharf, Municipal Pier and see views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. A night tour takes you to view night views of the Alcatraz lighthouse and the Bay Bridge lights or through the Marina District, Yacht Harbor and along the Marina Green. Youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

    Folsom

    • Folsom, a city in Northern California, is filled with historic sites, such as Folsom Prison, Sutter Street and the Folsom Museum. Folsom Prison opened in 1880, and many people recognize the name from a song by Johnny Cash called "Folsom Prison Blues." The prison still houses about 5,000 inmates, as of October 2010, and serves as a museum as well. Sutter Steet has original buildings that date back to the California Gold Rush and still serves as a shopping area, with a variety of shops and restaurants. The Folsom Zoo educates the public about different animals and their habitats.
