How Many Mountains Have Been Climbed? No Definitive Count Exists
There is no authoritative global database of summited mountains, so an exact count is impossible.
Scale Estimates
- Total named mountains >200 m (656 ft): Likely >1 million (per topographic databases like GMBA, OpenTopo).
- Climbed at least once: Only a fraction. Famous peaks (Everest, Kilimanjaro, Denali, Aconcagua) have thousands of ascents. Most minor peaks have few or zero recorded ascents.
- Unclimbed peaks: Many remote, technical, or restricted summits (e.g., in Tibet, Bhutan, Greenland, Antarctica, Patagonia, Karakoram) remain unclimbed.
Definitions Matter
"Mountain" lacks a universal definition (prominence, isolation). "Climbed" varies: first ascent by any human? Documented? By a specific style? The Himalayan Database tracks >8,000m peaks; Peakbagger.com and SummitPost crowdsource data but are incomplete.
In short: millions of mountains exist; only a tiny percentage have verified ascents.
