Mountain Ranges of Montana: From the Rockies to Glacier National Park

The Northern Rocky Mountains: Montana's Backbone

Western Montana is dominated by the Rocky Mountains, a colossal chain stretching from Canada to New Mexico. Within Montana, this system fractures into numerous sub-ranges, each with distinct character:

  • Bitterroot Range – Forms the Idaho border; rugged, glaciated peaks like Trapper Peak (10,157 ft).
  • Cabinet Mountains – Northwest; known for alpine lakes and wilderness.
  • Mission Mountains – East of Flathead Lake; dramatic east-facing cliffs.
  • Beartooth Mountains – South-central; high plateau with hundreds of lakes.

Middle Rocky Mountains: Island Ranges of Central Montana

East of the main Rockies, isolated "island ranges" rise from the plains, geologically part of the Middle Rockies:

  • Little Belt Mountains – Rolling, forested summits near Great Falls.
  • Big Snowy Mountains – Highest island range; home to Crystal Lake Cave.
  • Crazy Mountains – Sharp, isolated peaks visible for miles; Crazy Peak (11,214 ft) dominates.

Glacier National Park: Crown of the Continent

The park showcases the Lewis Range (east), Livingstone Range (west), and Ahern Range (north). These ranges feature:

  • Active glaciers (rapidly receding)
  • Arêtes, cirques, and U-shaped valleys carved by ice
  • Iconic peaks: Mount Cleveland (10,466 ft), Mount Stimson (10,142 ft)
  • Pristine lakes: McDonald, St. Mary, Two Medicine

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness: The High Country

Straddling the Montana-Wyoming border, this vast wilderness includes:

  • Granite Peak (12,807 ft) – Montana's highest point
  • Mount Warren (11,620 ft)
  • Extensive alpine tundra, over 300 lakes, and grizzly bear habitat

Geological Diversity

Montana's mountains span Precambrian Belt Supergroup metasediments (Glacier), Paleozoic carbonates (Big Snowies), Mesozoic volcanics (Absaroka), and Laramide uplifts (Rocky Mountain front). This variety creates world-class hiking, climbing, skiing, and wildlife viewing.
