Carbondale is a city in Jackson County, southern Illinois. It sits at the intersection of IL-13 and US-51, approximately:

• 320 miles (5 hrs) south of Chicago
• 120 miles (2 hrs) southeast of St. Louis, MO
• 60 miles (1 hr) northwest of Paducah, KY

It is home to Southern Illinois University (SIU) and lies near the Shawnee National Forest, Crab Orchard NWR, and the Wine Trail. The earlier claim that "Carbondale is not in Illinois" was incorrect.
