Mini Vacations for Families

Families looking for a mini vacation can have a range of choices. Destinations such as Hershey, Pennsylvania and Lake George in the Adirondacks offer a change of pace with a variety of activities that appeal to young and old alike. For a relaxing getaway, a cruise to Nassau in the Bahamas is a short trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Cruise ships offer everything from spa treatments and nightly entertainment to organized daytime and evening activities for the kids.
  1. Hershey, Pennsylvania

    • For a sweet vacation, try Hershey, Pennsylvania, home to the Hershey chocolate factory. From the time that Milton Hershey built his factory in 1905 until today, the town of Hershey has been associated with chocolate. Families can enjoy a visit to Chocolate World, an attraction that simulates the creation of a chocolate bar where visitors choose the ingredients and watch as the candy bar proceeds down the assembly line. Hershey Park amusement park offers rides and characters for the kids, and the Hershey Bears ice hockey team can be seen in town during a home game. The Hershey Country Club has three golf courses, and events and entertainment is available at Hersheypark Stadium and Hershey Theater.

    Bahamas Mini Cruise

    • A 3 or 4 night mini cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Nassau can offer something for everyone. The ship may offer organized day camps and supervised meals for children, while parents participate in all the activities the cruise ship has to offer. Once on shore in the Bahamas, families can do a little sightseeing at Parliament Square, take a surrey ride, and visit exotic gardens with wildlife and plants. A day trip to a local well-known hotel and casino has aquariums, beaches with snorkel gear for rent, and theme areas for an additional fee. Water sports are available at Cable Beach, situated 5 miles from the port.

    Lake George in the Adirondacks

    • If you live in the New York City area, a weekend getaway to the Adirondack Mountains and Lake George is an ideal family destination. Lake George is just a four hour drive from Manhattan, but a world away in terms of setting. Visitors can enjoy skiing at Gore Mountain, ice skating and sledding during the winter months, and golf, tennis, fishing, sailing and water sports in the summer months. Campgrounds and RV parks are available around Lake George.
