The first Potbelly Sandwich Shop opened in Chicago in 1977. As of 2010, there are locations in eleven states and the District of Columbia. Its Foggy Bottom location is located three blocks south of the Foggy Bottom/GWU subway station. Hardly a fast-food chain, Potbelly earned its reputation from its made-to-order toasted sandwiches, with meats and cheeses sliced each day, as well as cookies baked fresh throughout the day. You can order any of the signature sandwiches like the Italian, Meatball or Vegetarian in their original size, their "Big" size with 30 percent more of the fillings, or their "Skinny" size, with a quarter less fat, a third less bread, and less meat and cheese than the original. Potbelly also features two salads made either with grilled chicken or as vegetarian, soups, chilis, shakes, malts and smoothies. As of 2010, there is a delivery fee of $3.50 for a minimum lunch order of $25 or more. Delivery times are weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Place your take-out order online so that you can quickly pick up your food onsite.

An international chain whose first store in Los Angeles opened in 1986, Johnny Rockets built its following from the Americana that its hamburgers, sandwiches and hand-dipped shakes and malts represent. Johnny Rockets' Foggy Bottom location is three blocks east along I St. NW from the Foggy Bottom/GWU subway station. Johnny Rockets may draw from classic Americana for its stylistic inspiration; but it incorporates new health trends. Any one of its 14 burgers can be made with a turkey patty, a soy burger or a wheat bun. Johnny Rockets makes all its fried foods, including their French fries, with soybean oil. Also on the menu are six sandwiches, including a Philly Cheese Steak, and four salads. Call ahead your order so that you can pick it up faster once you arrive.
