Moosehead Lake, Maine Vacations

Moosehead Lake, Maine, is a popular vacation destination in both the winter and summer. Winter visitors can go ice fishing, cross county skiing or snowmobiling through the forest or on the frozen, 40-mile-long lake. In warmer months, recreational opportunities include whitewater rafting, canoeing, biking, hiking and horseback riding. If your interests lie more in town, you can browse the antique shops, art galleries and museum in the town of Greenville.
  1. Blair Hill Lake

    • For a view of Moosehead Lake from almost every room, stay at the Blair Hill Inn. Set in an 1891 mansion overlooking the lake, the inn's eight rooms feature amenities such as wood-burning fireplaces, fresh flowers from the inn's gardens, feather beds and private bathrooms with soaking tubs and marble fixtures. Stroll in the inn's 15 landscaped acres, complete with herb, vegetable and flower gardens, fountains and a trout pond. Inn staff can help arrange activities such as sea plane rides, fly fishing charters or a moose-viewing safari. If you're visiting in the winter, borrow one of the inn's toboggans for some downhill adventure on nearby Blair Hill. Guests receive a hot breakfast, and the inn's dining room serves gourmet, five-course dinners Thursday through Saturday evenings.

Moose Country Safari and Eco Tours

    • Take a safari and search for the lake's namesake. Moose Country Safari and Eco Tours offers year-round moose, wildlife and waterfall tours. Bring your camera as you tour through the north woods in search of North America's largest land mammal, the moose. Tours include transportation in Jeeps and can include canoeing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and tubing. Some tours include hot meals and drinks.

    Historic Pittston Farm

    • Historic Pittston Farm offers a variety of activities throughout the year. Winter visitors can go cross-country skiing, sledding or snowmobiling on more than 100 miles of trails that connect the Moosehead Lake region all the way north to Canada. In the spring, visitors to the farm can help with the maple syrup harvest or do some bird watching. Summer activities include fishing for brook trout, ATV riding and hiking. In the fall, visitors can take a fall foliage walk through the grounds or go hunting for bear, moose or deer.

Katahdin Cruises and Moosehead Marine Museum

    • Take a cruise on Moosehead Lake on the Katahdin, a steamboat built in 1914. The vessel is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Take the three-hour cruise and travel 12 miles up the lake to Deer and Sugar islands, or cruise for four and a half hours to Mount Kineo's 800-foot cliffs. Cruises include a narration of the region's history and indoor and outdoor seating. Refreshments are available from the onboard galley. After the cruise, stop by the Moosehead Marine Museum. The museum contains a collection of historic photographs and artifacts from Moosehead Lake's steamboat era.
