Tourism is an important facet of the Cuban economy. Havana is the country's capital and a widely visited tourist destination. Havana is home to a myriad of hotels, restaurants and attractions such as La India Fountain, Parque de la Fraternidad, the Bacardi building and historic homes of various famous people which have been preserved and transformed into museums.
  1. Abel Santamaria's House Museum

    • Abel Santamaria's House Museum is a preserved apartment in which Abel Santamaria Cuadrado met with other revolutionaries to discuss concerns and problems. Santamaria was appointed "second in command" of the revolutionary movement led by Fidel Castro in the 1950s. Santamaria was instrumental in the attack on Villa Clara's "Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Garrisons" in July of 1953. The Museum is open Monday through Friday.

    Finca Vigia

    • Ernest Hemingway's home in Cuba, known as "Finca Vigia" or "Lookout Farm," is located less than 10 miles (15 kilometers) from the center of Havana. Hemingway's home is now the site of the Museo Ernest Hemingway, which is open daily and allows visitors to view the author's library and various personal possessions, which have been preserved. Hemingway lived in the home from 1939 until 1960 and worked on many of his well-known books including The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls. There is a garden in which the author created a pet cemetery.

    The House of Jose Lezama Lima

    • The House of Jose Lezama Lima commemorates the place in which Lima lived with his mother and wrote many of his famous poems and novels including Paradiso. The house displays Lima's personal collection of art and other personal effects. Lima is widely regarded as one of Latin America's most influential writers.

    The Alejandro Humboldt Museum

    • The Alejandro Humboldt Museum is located in Humboldt's restored 18th-century home in the oldest part of the city, known as "Old Havana." The Museum's goal is to preserve Humboldt's research and legacy. There are five rooms which exhibit various documents, books, tools and pictures related to the scientist's life, work and relation to Cuban society. The museum also has a large conference room, which can accommodate up to 100 people; a library; and four upstairs cabins, which are available for rental. The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.
