Waterfalls in Northern VA

Waterfalls are one of the most popular natural landmarks for people to visit. While the waterfalls in northern Virginia may not rate as high as Niagara Falls or Victoria Falls, they're still beautiful. You can visit many different waterfalls in northern Virginia, especially if you like to go hiking or camping. You'll find many of the most visited waterfalls in northern Virginia in state parks or national forests.
  1. Cascades

    • Located in Giles County, Virginia in the Jefferson National Forest, the Cascades rank as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Virginia. The water falls about 69 feet into a pool surrounded by 200-foot cliffs. Visitors can stand on staircases and platforms near the pool to get a really good look at the waterfall and take some pictures. Call or visit the Giles County web site to get more information about the falls and any fees that may apply.

    Rose River

    • Rose River Falls is part of Shenandoah National Park. To get a glimpse of Rose River Falls, hike around the loop trail, which descends about 1½ miles. While hiking to Rose River Falls, you can also see old homesteads and an old copper mine. Contact the ranger's office for current conditions of the trail and the falls.

    Doyle's River

    • Doyle's River Falls in Shenandoah National Park has three different sections, two of which are 28 and 63 feet high. It's best to visit Doyle's River Falls in the early spring or fall when the overgrowth of weeds doesn't impede your view of the falls. Many rock formations are also easily accessible for climbing on.

    Crabtree Falls

    • Nelson County, Virginia is home to Crabtree Falls, a popular place for hiking, picnicking and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can view the bottommost part of the falls from an easily accessible, paved walkway, which is convenient to the parking lot. Crabtree Falls are the tallest waterfalls east of Mississippi. The falls are just over one mile from the parking lot, which makes it an easy hike for most people.

    Apple Orchard Falls

    • You'll find Apple Orchard Falls in the Jefferson National Forest. Hike down to Apple Orchard Falls from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Apple Orchard Falls has many levels of cascading water. The hike up to the falls is very steep, but only about ½ mile in length.
