Northern California River Campgrounds

Campgrounds offer travelers unique and natural settings to spend their time, complete with an array of activities and spots of land that offer a completely different experience than staying at hotels and motels. It’s not for everyone, but plenty of people flock with their RVs and tents to commune with nature and get away from it all. In Northern California, there are a number of campgrounds to choose from, and many of them feature campsites right on a river.
  1. Redwood River Resort

    • Located among Northern California’s vast redwood tree forests is the aptly named Redwood River Resort. Here, guests will find both tent sites as well as campsites with RV hookups. No electricity or water is provided at tent sites, but there is a general store that sells ice, jugs of wate, and even portable generators for those who need some electricity.

All sites have picnic tables and fire pits, and most are under full or partial shade provided by massive redwoods. Activities here include foosball and ping-pong in the indoor recreation room, and volleyball and horseshoes outside.

The campground is also located along the Eel River, to which guests have private access to the water and the two swimming pools located in the river.

    River Rest Resort

    • The River Rest Resort offers campsites located along the South Yuba River, with most of the tent sites being located right on the riverbank. RV sites can be found here as well, though some might not be on the water, though all the campsites are a short walk away.

At the general store, large inflatable tubes can be rented for lazy floating down the river. There are also many trails and roads zigzagging through the campground that are perfect for hiking, jogging, biking, or even driving ATV’s.

Campsites at the resort vary in size, though they do have some combination of water and/or electricity available, even at tent sites.

    Gualala River Redwood Park

    • Located along the Gualala River, among northern California’s redwoods, is the Gualala River Redwood Park. There are 120 camping sites located within the borders of the campground, 20 of them with river views and the rest located not far from the water’s edge.

All of the campsites here are equipped with water and electricity and fire pits. The general store has RV equipment, ice, and firewood available to all guests. Canoeing, kayaking, and tubing are popular activities along the river, which flows 1 mile into the Pacific Ocean.
