Things to Do in Long Beach, Washington

Considered the "best beach in Western Washington," according to King 5 and "Evening Magazine," here you will find surf-and-turf food, historical museums in Cape Disappointment State Park, a wealth of outdoor activities--from beach combing to kayaking to clam digging and horseback riding--and the oldest functioning lighthouse on the West Coast. Your visit to the Long Beach Peninsula will be jam-packed. Situated at the mouth of the Columbia River, this southwest Washington Peninsula also touches the Willapa Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
  1. Wildlife

    • Visitors can go whale-watching from Cape Disappointment and do seasonal clam and crab harvesting in Willapa Bay. For a more comprehensive wildlife tour, with birds, elk, deer, grouse and beaver, spend time in one of the two Willapa National Wildlife Refuge areas. Ledbetter Point is the larger of the two, located at the north tip of the Penisula. The Lewis and Riekkola Units are on the south end of Willapa Bay, with marshes and waterfowl lands.

    Interactive and Educational

    • The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is open year-round so that visitors can explore the region's geographic discovery. Learn why this coastal area is known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific" and how Fort Canby became Cape Disappointment State Park. Visit the Ilwaco Heritage Museum (also known as the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum) to understand the history of the Native Americans who first settled in this region. The Willapa Bay interpretive Center is an oyster station replica. Cranberry Museum and Farm detail the history and production of cranberry farming, which still occurs today. Kite enthusiasts will be thrilled to tour the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame.

    Outdoor Recreation

    • Take up golfing at the Peninsula Golf Course which offers personal and group training for its nine-hole course where families are welcome to golf together. Back Country Wilderness Outfitters is one of four horse adventure options for carriage rides or beach horseback riding for children and adults. Charter boats for scenic tours or fishing trips around the Peninsula. Take the water yourself with kayak lessons and then a Colombia River tour or day trip.
Use the Visitors' Bureau website to find reputable lodging resources and nearby restaurants to complete your visit to Long Beach (see Resources).
