How to Plan a Day Trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards

Step back into the old west when you visit the Fort Worth Stockyards. This historic district is full of western fun, from longhorn cattle to a vintage railroad. Learn all about the great stockyards and their importance to the Texas economy. Though you will be getting a lesson in history, you will also enjoy some good ol' Texas fun!

      Ride the Tarantula train. The Tarantula is the only steam-operated train in Texas. This little vintage railroad will authenticate your experience at the Fort Worth Stockyards. Train depots are located at 707 South Main Street in Grapevine and on 140 East Exchange Avenue in Fort Worth. Whether you ride to the Stockyards from Grapevine or just take a round trip from the Stockyards and back, this will add charm to your day.

      Watch the Fort Worth herd. This is the only longhorn cattle drive in the United States that happens daily. Watch real cowboys lead these marvelous cattle through the Stockyards.

      Check the calendar for special events. You will not want to miss any of the spectacular shows and experiences. The most popular event is the CowKid Roundup. Your little buckaroos will learn all about roping cattle, branding, riding stick horses and doing fancy rope tricks.

      Visit the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. Here you will learn all about the real rough and tumble cowboys that ruled the wild Texas range. See a real wagon collection and wander through the John Justin Trail of Fame.

      Eat at Riscky's Steakhouse. Any entree you order at this Texas steakhouse will be mouth-watering and hearty enough for the hungriest cowboy or cowgirl. All-you-can-eat ribs with Riscky's special barbeque sauce will surely satisfy even the largest appetite. Texas cuisine done right is what you will find here.

      Spend time perusing the many shops. Find unique jewelry, hats and hot Texas items. There is a lot to choose from at the many shops in the Stockyards. You will definitely want to bring home a souvenir. Perhaps a pair of cowboy boots or a western style birdhouse will fit your tastes.
